The Ring Finger: Where Did That Tradition Come From?

February 23rd, 2011

Your partner is down on one knee holding onto your left hand and about to place a beautiful ring on your ring finger. That same finger gets more attention on your special day with the wedding band. Definitely the strongest finger on your left hand with all that weight! ;-)

So why does this ring finger get so much attention in the wedding world? While there are many traditions culturally and religiously, one of the most well known is the tradition of wedding ring placement. Here in the United States, it’s the ring finger.

This tradition dates back to Ancient Roman times.  They believed the fourth finger on your left hand was the only finger that had a vein connected directly to your heart.  They named this vein “Vena Amoris”, meaning the “vein of love”.  By placing a ring on this finger it was (and for most still is) the ultimate symbol of love.

Rings and other things

July 12th, 2009

Rings2When my parents got married everyone’s ring was basically the same: a solid band- gold or silver (before the advent of platinum). These days couples are looking for an expression of their style and love. Rings are a declaration of marriage and also a show of personality. I recently came across a lovely wedding photographer Jules Bianchi whose work is just beautiful. One of the most interesting categories on her site, that I had not seen before, is the “rings and other things”. Just one look at these photos and you’ll not only want to dive into her site but take a look at how you can make your left ring finger sparkle.

**The other big bit these days are inscriptions. I, myself, love this. Anything to bring you into the item ,makes it not just a sign, but a personal reflection.

Romance Me.

April 28th, 2008

Romance me baby. I love any and everything romantic, of course I do, right? I think deep inside of every girl there is a little lust for beautiful things. That’s where the engagement ring comes in. But before that the trial and tribulation about the ring and then the proposal. In honor of my favorite stories I thought I’d share a link. Inspiration for the guys and a little flutter fluff for the girls.
So check out Tacori http://www.tacori.com/mm5/love_stories_c.php
**Alright, I realize that this is a shameless plug for Tacori, I don’t have any relationship with them- I just like mush**

Rules of Engagement

November 23rd, 2007

Over the past month I’ve had quite a few guys asking me about rings, proposals and what happens next? So many of us girls patiently (or maybe not so patiently) await the knee drop. But what does a modern gent do before the big question? Before the “big” purchase, do your research.

There are hundreds of sites to help you think online. I particularly like any web site that allows you to design your own ring. Websites are great for ideas so take a look. Do you know her ring size (average is 6-7)? Does she often wear silver or gold? Is her taste ultra feminine or more bold, maybe modern? After choosing a beautiful stone, you may just want to propose with a simple setting (I call it an ice cube on a silver tray).

After the proposal you two can build the dream setting. After the courting, planning and big purchase get ready. When you walk out of the store you’re heart might sink. Take a moment to call your insurance company and get a rider on your home or renters to cover replacement. That way you can rest easy (okay easier). Take a breath, enjoy the moment and celebrate this once in a lifetime opportunity.
